Pull the modern loaf of bread apart and look at the machinery behind it. The wheat was planted, sprayed, and harvested by diesel machines. It was grown with fertilizer conjured from natural gas. It crossed oceans on ships and continents on trucks, tracked by software, timed to arrive just as the shelf emptied — a system so lean it holds only a few days of slack. It is one of the most astonishing collaborative achievements in human history, and it is also a tightrope. Every one of us is standing on it, and almost none of us knows how to get down if it snaps.
I don't say that to frighten you. I say it because I've become quietly obsessed with a question that I think is the wisest question of our age, and it is not "will the tightrope snap?" It's "do we still remember how to walk on the ground?"
Because here is the thing we've forgotten: for ten thousand years, human beings fed themselves without a single drop of diesel. They did it with animals, seeds, soil, and knowledge passed hand to hand down the generations. That knowledge was the most valuable inheritance a family could give. And in the space of about three generations, we have very nearly thrown it away — traded it for the tightrope, and never learned the way back to solid earth. I want to help us remember. Let me show you why, and then exactly how.
The Dominoes Nobody Wants to Line Up
I'm going to walk the scary logic honestly, and then I'm going to tell you why the answer is more hopeful than the fear.
Fossil fuels are finite. Not "running out tomorrow" — I said in an earlier dispatch that they deplete gradually, not off a cliff, and that there's no fundamental energy shortage on a planet the sun floods with power. That's all true. But finite is finite, and the transition off them will be long, uneven, and — for some people and some countries — genuinely painful.
And renewables don't rescue the individual the way people hope. Here I want to make an argument sharper than the usual one, because the usual one is wrong. People say "solar and wind will be too expensive." That's shaky — small solar is actually getting cheaper. So forget price. Here's the real point, the one that can't be argued away: you cannot build a solar panel in your backyard. You cannot forge a lithium battery, or manufacture a tractor, or refine diesel, or even make the pump and the pipe for an irrigation line. Every one of those things ties you, permanently, to a factory, a supply chain, and the handful of powerful people and institutions who own them. Even irrigation — the thing that looks like independence — is a leash to a system you don't control. Solar isn't the enemy. Dependence is. And the more of your survival that depends on systems you can't see, can't fix, and can't own, the less free you actually are. That's not a political statement. It's true for a farmer in any country, under any flag, in any century.
Now add the machines that think. As I wrote about the artificial minds we're building, automation is coming for an enormous share of human work, faster than our institutions are ready for. A world where a few own the machines that do the labor — and everyone else has to ask them, nicely, for a living — is not a conspiracy theory. It's just the incentive gradient, and it points somewhere uncomfortable.
And then there's the domino people flinch from: war. Here I need you to understand that I am not being lurid. I'm citing documented history. When a great nation goes to full war, its industry is legally and deliberately turned away from feeding people and toward killing them. This isn't speculation — it is exactly, precisely what happened the last time. In 1941, American factories built more than three million civilian cars; over the entire rest of the Second World War, they built one hundred and thirty-nine. The plants that made cars now made tanks and bombers. Food, fuel, rubber, and metal were rationed. Two-thirds of the economy was swallowed by the war. The machine that fed people was, overnight, repurposed to defeat an enemy — and the citizens were, quite literally, told to go grow their own dinner.
And you don't even need a world war to see the tightrope wobble. You've watched it happen. In 2020, a virus emptied shelves and closed meatpacking plants; online shoppers hit more than two billion "out of stock" messages in a single month. In 2022, one war between two countries you may never visit sent the world's food prices to the highest level ever recorded — because Russia and Ukraine happened to grow a quarter of the planet's exported wheat and a huge share of its fertilizer. The price of the fertilizer that modern farming cannot function without jumped by more than 40% in a month; urea rose 76%. Nearly two hundred million people were pushed into food crisis. That was not the apocalypse. That was a Tuesday, geopolitically speaking — and the shelves still shook.
"World War Four Will Be Fought With Sticks and Stones"
There's a line, attributed to Albert Einstein around 1947–49 (honestly, its true origin is disputed — versions of it floated around before his name got attached), and it is the most sobering sentence I know:
"I know not with what weapons World War Three will be fought, but World War Four will be fought with sticks and stones."
Sit with the horror of that, and then sit with the practicality of it, because they're the same thing. He wasn't predicting the fighting. He was predicting the aftermath — a world knocked so far backward that it has to start over with the oldest tools we have. And here's the quiet, non-hysterical point I want to make, the one that separates wisdom from paranoia: we must do everything in our power to make sure that never happens — and we must not be naïve enough to believe it can't. Human beings have been fighting each other, over land and food and resources, for the entire length of our recorded existence. Every generation has believed it was too civilized to slide backward. Some were right. Some were catastrophically wrong. Betting the survival of your grandchildren on "surely not us, surely not now" is not optimism. It's amnesia.
This probably will not happen in our lifetime. I sincerely hope it never happens at all. But hope is not a plan, and the wise move isn't to predict the collapse — it's to make sure that if it ever comes, we are not helpless. And the way you do that costs nothing and harms no one: you keep the knowledge alive. You remember how to walk on the ground.
The Only Technology That Owns Itself
So what does "the ground" actually look like? It looks like the one category of tool that needs no factory, no fuel, no grid, and no permission — because it makes more of itself, for free, forever.
You cannot manufacture a tractor. But a horse breeds another horse. You cannot refine a barrel of diesel. But a horse refuels on grass. You cannot 3-D-print a rabbit, but one rabbit doe makes forty more rabbits in a year. A goat makes goats. A hen makes hens. And a single saved seed makes a thousand seeds, which make a million, which feed a village. This is the oldest and most subversive technology on Earth: living things that reproduce themselves. They answer to no supply chain and no owner. They are the definition of independence. And we've spent a century forgetting how to work with them. Let me give you the real field guide — the honest numbers, the genuine skills, and the honest limits, because romance without accuracy is just another way to get people hurt.
The Horse: Power That Grows on Grass
Before the tractor, the farm ran on horses, and it ran well. A team of two draft horses can work meaningful ground — roughly two acres of intensive cultivation, up to a dozen or more of general fieldwork; a good team can disc around ten acres in a day, mow eight acres of hay, plant, cultivate, and haul. They cost about an acre of pasture and a winter's hay apiece — and then, unlike any machine ever built, they make more horses.
They come with a bonus modern agronomy is only now re-appreciating: they don't wreck the soil the way machines do. The single biggest cause of the hidden yield-killer called soil compaction is the tire traffic of heavy equipment — it crushes the pore spaces roots and water need, and the losses are real: 10–30% in corn, up to 37% in alfalfa, and one trial recorded a 40% grass-yield drop from the very first pass of a heavy tractor. A horse's hoof is a fraction of that weight. The old way, it turns out, was quietly gentler on the living earth.
I won't romanticize the labor. Horses "are not tractors with tails." It took one modern farmer nine years to fully drop his tractor; a team needs about 45 minutes of harnessing and care a day, and a spooked half-ton animal is genuinely dangerous. This is a craft, not a shortcut. But a craft is exactly the kind of thing you can teach — and a craft, unlike a fuel tank, never runs empty.
The Rabbit: The Quiet Miracle in the Hutch
If I could put one animal into every anxious household, it would be the humble meat rabbit, because pound for pound it may be the most efficient protein a person can raise in a small space. Meat breeds convert feed to meat at roughly three to four pounds of feed per pound of gain — noticeably better than cattle's seven-plus (an honest rule of thumb, not a lab constant, and with a real caveat: cattle eat grass we can't, while rabbits want richer feed). But the true magic is the math of their breeding. A doe is pregnant for just 31 days and can raise several litters a year of six to ten kits each — so one doe can put roughly a hundred pounds of meat on the table in a year, from a hutch you could fit in a garden shed. No barn, no acreage, no diesel.
The honest caveats matter: rabbit is extremely lean — so lean that it famously can't be your only food ("rabbit starvation" is a real thing) — so it belongs alongside eggs, milk, fat, and vegetables, not alone. But here's the tell that should make you trust the whole idea: we used to know this. Rabbits fed families through the Depression and the war years. They only fell out of favor after WWII — not because they stopped working, but because the industrial food system arrived and made us forget we'd ever needed them.
The Goat: The Animal That Eats the Land Nobody Wants
I've written a whole love letter to dairy goats, so I'll be brief: goats are browsers, not grazers — they eat the woody scrub and brush at eye level that cattle can't touch, which means they thrive on marginal, "useless" land. Research has clocked goats cutting brush cover from 45% down to 15% in a single year, clearing invasive tangles of kudzu and privet while turning it into milk, cheese, meat — and manure. Which brings us to the engine that ties the whole farm together.
The Loop: Manure, Worms, and the Fertilizer You Never Have to Buy
Remember that fertilizer price shock — the one that jumped 76% because of a distant war? On the farm I'm describing, you never make that phone call, because the animals make the fertilizer. Bees are the tiny livestock that feed everything else. Insect pollinators contribute something like $29 billion to US farm income, honey bees alone around $12–15 billion, pollinating scores of the crops you actually eat — and they hand you honey and wax as a bonus for a hive that mostly runs itself. Chickens give eggs, meat, pest control, and more fertilizer, on kitchen scraps and bugs.
And the ostrich — because you asked, and because I promised to check rather than just believe. I looked into it honestly, and I have to report that the "super-efficient survival bird" hype is mostly myth. Ostriches convert feed well only as young chicks; by slaughter weight their efficiency collapses toward ten-to-one, far worse than a rabbit, and despite their desert reputation they need constant fresh water. They're a magnificent, strange, lucrative bird — wonderful for meat, leather, and eggs if you fancy them — but they are a hobby of abundance, not a pillar of survival. I'd rather tell you that than sell you a feathered fantasy.
Dryland Farming: Growing Food With No Irrigation at All
And the crops? Here is the most quietly radical piece: you can grow real food with no irrigation whatsoever. It's called dry farming, it is ancient — practiced for thousands of years across the Mediterranean, the Middle East, North Africa, in China for eight millennia, by the Hopi in the American desert — and it works by living off the rain the soil already banked in the wet season. The techniques are knowledge, not hardware: drought-tolerant varieties, careful planting timing, a "dust mulch" of loose topsoil that seals the moisture in, wide spacing so plants don't fight over water, ruthless weed control. Winter wheat, barley, grapes, olives, and tomatoes are all routinely dry-farmed — and the dry-farmed tomato and grape come out more concentrated and sweeter, a gift rather than a sacrifice. The honest limit: yields are lower, you plant fewer plants per acre, and it needs a region with enough reliable seasonal rain (roughly twenty inches) — it is not a magic trick for a true desert. But it needs no pump, no pipe, and no factory. It needs a farmer who knows how.
The Seed: The Whole Future in Your Hand
And under all of it, the seed. Here is a statistic that should stop you cold: the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that about 75% of the world's crop genetic diversity was lost over the twentieth century, as farmers abandoned thousands of local varieties for a handful of uniform commercial hybrids. And those modern hybrids have a catch built in: you can't save their seed and have it grow true. You have to buy new seed, every single year, from the company. The old open-pollinated varieties — the ones your great-grandmother's neighbors traded over fences — reproduce themselves faithfully, forever, for free. Saving seed isn't nostalgia. It's the single most important act of independence a grower can perform, and we are, right now, forgetting how.
The Proof That This Works: A History We Already Lived
If all this sounds like a fantasy, let me remind you that it isn't a prediction — it's a rerun. The last time the machine that feeds people got commandeered for war, ordinary citizens did exactly what I'm describing, and it worked spectacularly.
They were called victory gardens. During the Second World War, more than twenty million American households — plus their British cousins under the "Dig for Victory" banner — tore up lawns and vacant lots and grew their own food, because the industrial farms and the shipping lanes were consumed by the war. And they didn't grow a token amount. In 1943, victory gardens produced around forty percent of the fresh produce grown in the entire United States — some ten billion pounds of food — from the hands of amateurs, in backyards, in a single year.
Read that again, because it's the whole thesis in one fact. When the system failed, the people fed themselves — because they still remembered how. The knowledge was the safety net. And the terrifying difference between 1943 and today is that our great-grandparents still had that knowledge in their hands, and most of us have let it fall out of ours. The victory garden worked because Grandma knew how to plant one. The open question of our century is whether her great-grandchildren still would.
So Here Is What I'm Actually Building
This is the part where the fear turns, finally and completely, into hope — because the answer to all of the above is not a bunker, and it is not despair. It is a school.
I am saving up to build a farm. Not a hobby plot and not a fortress — a real, working, off-grid, animal-powered organic farm, run the old way on purpose: horses instead of tractors (and gentler soil for it), rabbits, goats, and chickens for protein that reproduces itself, bees for the pollination and the honey, vermicompost for fertilizer we never have to buy, dryland techniques and saved open-pollinated seed so the whole thing needs no pump, no grid, no supply chain, and no one's permission. Volunteers will work it without machines — which, bonus, means no soil compaction. It will be organic not as a marketing sticker but as a necessity, because that's simply what farming is when you refuse to depend on the factory.
But the animals and the acreage are not really the point. The point is that it will be a place that teaches. A working school of the oldest arts we have — beekeeping, draft-horse plowing, dry farming, seed-saving, the stewardship of living soil — where people come, put their hands in the dirt, and learn. And every lesson gets documented — written here, and, as it grows, filmed — so that the knowledge doesn't just survive in one field, but spreads, and gets handed down to our children and our grandchildren the way it was handed to us for ten thousand years, right up until we nearly dropped it.
That is the most hopeful thing I know how to do about a frightening future. Not to hoard. Not to hide. To teach. To make sure that whatever happens — and I pray it's nothing — the knowledge of how to feed ourselves is alive, and shared, and impossible to lose again. A gift to people I'll never meet, in a year I'll never see, just in case. That's not doom. That's love with dirt under its fingernails.
